Cool, built in lighting is abundant in homes these days. I see it in just about every new home or newly renovated home I visit. Recessed lighting, pendant lighting, cool fixtures and sconces, classic or funky chandeliers, the variety seems to be endless. But when a staging client stopped by a project and saw lamps on the tables, I was shocked when he remarked, “I didn’t know anyone was using these anymore!”
My head popped up and I had to do a double take. Was he really talking about the lamps? Did he really assume that because there were lights in the ceiling that no other lighting would be appropriate? By the quizzical look on his face, I could see he was serious.
Lighting does so much more than pure function. Lighting can evoke such a warm ambience in a room. Used properly, it can create dramatic shadows that are in and of themselves, natural artwork. I love to use small lights under plants and in corners to play up these elements in ways that will balance and complete a room.
And just as there is a wide variety of hard wired light fixtures, so too is there an even wider variety of table and floor lamps. While we typically keep them fairly simple for our staging inventory, if you are shopping for your personal home, have some fun! Lamps are fantastic accent pieces and can instantly cheer up a room.
Don’t think that just because the builder put 30 light fixtures in the ceiling you have to use them all or that you are limited to just those. Go out and find some cool lamps that will fit your home’s design.

Hello there!
I think you brought up a really good point. I was actually thinking about this couple days ago. While staging, I place table lamps on side tables because otherwise there are no lighting in the bedrooms. However, most people I think now use overhead lights or installed wall sconces to read in bed. We have wall sconces at home so we can have more spaces on our side tables, which is not something we can install during home staging. Great topic!
Cheers,
Cindy
Thanks for stopping by Cindy.
Yes, sconces by the bed are cool too and having the space on the nightstand is very convenient, especially if you like to read in the evening.
I like the soft lighting you can get from various types of fixtures and lamps, so for me, in my home, having a choice is key.
I was always taught that lamps should be treated like a piece of sculpture. They bring a “form” into the room. The right lamp has the proper scale, shape, color, etc.
Hi Rachel,
You are so right. They are very much an integral part of a room’s design.
Why not have fun with them? Built-in lighting is great, but take advantage of the options additional lighting features offer too.

I very much agree that lamps can provide great ambience and mood lighting. Used in the correct room they can also be very relaxing. I believe that up to 80% of houses still have bedside lamps used mainly for reading so they are still popular! People should be encouraged to try out some new and funky lamps that can make great addition to any home.
